World Braille Day: The legacy of Louis Braille

Posted: Wednesday, January 4, 2023. 2:07 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Every year on January 4, the world observes World Braille day in honor of French inventor, Louis Braille and his contribution towards helping the visually impaired read and write.

Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical, and scientific symbols.

The United Nations noted that Braille is used by the visually impaired and partially sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font.

Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, Rossana Briceno is encouraging businesses and communities to create opportunities for the visually impaired.

“Let us continue to create awareness about the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals in Belize. I encourage businesses and communities to create economic and social opportunities for them for we are all one,” Briceno said.

World Braille Day is observed to raise awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication.
