By Benjamin Flowers: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) delivered a new house today, adding to a growing number of homes delivered countrywide.
“We’ve delivered almost 200 homes in the last fiscal year,” explained Marisa Alamilla, Marketing and Publicity Manager for the MIDH. “We’re looking to deliver another 50 homes in Burrell Boom come February.”
Alamilla stressed that the Burrell Boom homes are dependent on the quality of the buildings being up to standard, which may affect when they are delivered; however, she is content that delivering 100 high-quality homes is better than delivering a thousand that are sub-standard.
Alamilla noted that in Belize City, three of the houses are presenting challenges as they are in swamp land, but that filling has already commenced on two of them. She said that construction on two of those houses is scheduled to commence shortly, once stones are set on top of the clay filling.
The MIDH has managed to exceed the intended capacity for the first phase of the modular house pilot project, which had only projected 150 homes within the first phase. The homes have notably proven to be high-quality, with all of them withstanding Category 1 Hurricane Lisa in November and remaining intact. A total of 19 homes were delivered in December 2022.
