Mexican law enforcement officials reportedly detained Ovidio Guzmán-López in Sinaloa overnight.
Two planes including an Aeromexico E190 commercial flight were shot at, Simply flying reports.
The plane was on the runway of the Culiacan International Airport when it was shot at by members of the Sinaloa Cartel.
In a video shared on social media, passengers can be seen crouching on the floor as multiple shots are heard.
The Government is urging citizens in Sinaloa to remain indoors after chaos erupted including road blockades.
Three airports, Culiacán International, Mazatlán International (MZT), and Los Mochis International (LMM), have closed until further notice.
Members of the powerful drug cartel also shot at a Boeing 737-800 registration FAM-3526 operated by the Mexican Air Force.
Aeromexico later confirmed that the company detected a bullet hole in the fuselage of the aircraft and that flights were canceled.
In 2019, Mexican authorities detained Guzmán-López but released him to avoid the threat of violence.
