By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last month, Guatemalan Ambassador in Taiwan, Oscar Adolfo Padilla Lam said that Guatemala plans to host a summit in March for senior officials from “Taiwan-friendly” countries, Reuters report.
Taiwan’s three allies in Central America include Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.
The Guatemalan Ambassador presented his credentials on December 19, 2022 to Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-Wen.
“As Taiwan’s unchanging friend and ally, Guatemala intends to hold a high-level meeting of Taiwan-friendly countries in March to promote exchanges between friendly countries and reaffirm recognition and support for the Republic of China, Taiwan,” Padilla said.
“If President Tsai’s itinerary allows, I hope she can co-chair such an important meeting with President (Alejandro) Giammattei,” he added.
Taiwan’s President Tsai visited Guatemala in 2017 and Belize in 2018.
March’s summit will serve as a platform for Taiwan’s allies to conduct closer exchanges and to again show their joint commitment to Taiwan, Padilla stated.
