By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Local government in Culiacan in the Mexican state of Sinaloa suspended activities and public transport today following a night of gun violence and road blockades, Reuters report.

The roads were reportedly blocked by burning vehicles.

“We ask the citizens of Culiacan not to leave home due to the blockades that have occurred in different parts of the city,” Culiacan Mayor Juan de Dios Gamez said.

Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said a federal police operation is being conducted and that he didn’t have additional details on the situation.

Sinaloa is the home to the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel which was long led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman who is now imprisoned in the U.S.
