International News: China on “high alert” after U.S. warship sails through Taiwan Strait

Posted: Friday, January 6, 2023. 8:52 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, a U.S. warship sailed through Taiwan Strait as part of a routine activity, but the move has upset China, Reuters report.

U.S. warships and those of Britain and Canada have at times sales through the Taiwan Strait.

However, Chinese officials say that China firmly opposes that move.

In a statement from China’s Embassy in Washington, spokesman Liu Pengyu urged the U.S. to “immediately stop provoking troubles, escalating tensions and undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”

“China will continue to stay on high alert and is ready to respond to all threats and provocations at any time, and will resolutely safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added.

Meanwhile, officials in Taiwan said that the ship sailed through the Strait and they observed nothing out of the ordinary.

There have been heightened tensions since China claims the self-governing island.
