By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico’s Defense Minister, Luis Sandoval says that 29 people including 10 military personnel were killed in the violence surrounding the capture of Mexican cartel boss, Ovidio Guzman in Sinaloa on Thursday.
Mexican authorities detained Guzman, the son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman early Thursday morning.
Members of the cartel responded with hours of violence, road blockades, and shootouts, Reuters report.
The cartel kingpin was flown from Sinaloa to Mexico City where he is at a maximum security federal prison.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said there were no immediate plans to extradite Ovidio to the United States.
President Lopez Obrador says that the courts in Mexico have to decide.
The United States had sought Guzman’s extradition for years after being charged with conspiracy to traffic cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana into the United States.
