By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Friday, a federal judge in Mexico reportedly halted the extradition of cartel leader, Ovidio Guzman, CNN reports.
Guzman, the son of notorious drug kingpin, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was detained on Thursday in Sinaloa, Mexico.
The intense operation led to the deaths of 29 people including 10 military personnel.
The United States is seeking Guzman’s extradition after being charged with conspiracy to traffic cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana into the United States.
The U.S. had offered $5 million for information leading to the capture of Ovidio who they say is “a senior member of the Sinaloa Cartel.”
Mexico’s Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard confirmed the U.S. arrest warrant but said the extradition would not be immediate due to formalities of law.
Local media in Mexico say that a federal judge ordered Guzman to remain in 60 days of preventive detention for the purpose of extradition.
