By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Cases of COVID-19 and hospitalizations are increasing in the United States as health experts monitor closely the new Omicron strain, XBB1.5, Politico reports.
To date, about 6,500 people in U.S. hospitals have tested positive for COVID-19.
In December 2022, more than 10,000 people died from COVID-19, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data shows. This is the highest 4-week total since summer of 2022.
The Omicron XBB1.5 strain now accounts for 40% of cases in the U.S.
Experts say that holiday travel and gatherings contributed to the increase in cases.
Health experts continue to advise that the risks remain of getting infected with COVID-19 and the disease threats from flu and respiratory disease.
