Government launches emergency intervention for erosion in Isabella Bank

Posted: Monday, January 9, 2023. 5:55 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Belize via the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) has dispatched crews for an emergency intervention to address erosion in Isabella Bank.

The road through the village, located in the Belize River Valley, has begun to deteriorate due to erosion and was quickly becoming a hazard for motorists.

MIDH Marketing and Publicity Manager Marissa Alamilla spoke with Breaking Belize News (BBN) this evening, explaining that the issue was brought to the Ministry’s attention on Sunday, January 8. Ministry personnel went out that day to conduct an assessment and determined the level of intervention the problem would need.

“The MIDH team along with the district engineer are preparing a temporary road diversion of 20-30 ft away from the erosion failure for villagers and farmers to still have road access meanwhile we are preparing to start construction of retaining walls to prevent the failure along the side,” Alamilla said.

Concerned residents in the area reached out to BBN on Sunday, to raise concerns over the possible dangers if the problem was not addressed promptly.
