International News: El Salvador has detained 2% of its adult population in crackdown on gangs

Posted: Monday, January 9, 2023. 10:06 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In March of 2022, Salvadoran President, Nayib Bukele began a countrywide crackdown on gangs, his “mano-dura” approach has been widely supported by residents of the Central American country, CNN reports.

An estimated 2% of the country’s adult population has been detained amidst the gang crackdown. This is about 100,000 people.

While many human rights organizations call on the Salvadoran Government to respect the rights of those detained, surveys show that the measure is supported by the majority of residents.

The state of emergency has been extended every month since then and his measure seems to be working in reducing crime.

Last October, a survey of 12 Latin American countries by CID Gallup showed Bukele with an 86% approval rating, making him the most popular leader in the region.
