By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that he would consider accepting more migrants expelled by the U.S., the Associated Press reports.
The Mexican President, U.S. President Joe Biden, and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are meeting in Mexico for a North American summit.
“We don’t want to anticipate things, but this is part of what we are going to talk about at the summit. We support this type of measure, to give people options, alternatives,” Lopez Obrador said.
U.S. President Joe Biden’s National security advisor, Jake Sullivan told the media that discussions were ongoing.
Before the summit, Biden announced that the U.S. will send 30,000 migrants per month from Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Venezuela back across the border from among those who entered the U.S. illegally.
The U.S. will also accept 30,000 people per month from those 4 countries for 2 years and offer the ability to work legally.
The United States recorded 2.2 million migrant arrests at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2022.
