International News: Over 3,000 soldiers involved in operation to capture Chapo’s son in Mexico

Posted: Monday, January 9, 2023. 4:14 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Officials in Mexico say that 3,586 soldiers were a part of the operation to capture the son of infamous drug kingpin, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, Fox reports.

On Thursday, cartel members responded with widespread violence and clashes with authorities leaving 10 Mexican soldiers and 19 cartel gunmen dead.

The U.S. had offered $5 million for information leading to the capture of Ovidio Guzman who they say is “a senior member of the Sinaloa Cartel.”

Guzman was wanted by U.S. authorities for charges of conspiracy to traffic cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana into the United States.

As part of the operation, Mexican authorities seized 26 rifles, six .50-caliber machine guns, and 26 armored vehicles as part of the operation targeting the cartel.

In 2022, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) confiscated 379 million doses of fentanyl.

The DEA noted that the Sinaloa cartel is responsible for the influx of the drug into the U.S.
