International News: Taiwan condemns China for military combat drills near island

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Taiwan condemned China for conducting military combat drills near the island, Reuters reported.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry reportedly detected 57 Chinese aircraft.

There have been heightened tensions between Taiwan and China since China views Taiwan as its territory and has long vowed to “reunify” the self-governing democratic island.

Chinese officials say that its forces held “joint combat readiness patrols and actual combat drills” in the sea and airspace around Taiwan.

The purpose was reportedly to test joint combat capabilities and “resolutely counter the provocative actions of external forces and Taiwan independence separatist forces”.

But, Taiwan’s Presidential office condemned the drills and said that the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait and the region were the common responsibility of both Taiwan and China.

Taiwan said that it will not provoke disputes nor escalate conflicts.
