Belize reportedly has sixth highest murder rate in the region – Commissioner confirms 113 murders in 2022

Posted: Tuesday, January 10, 2023. 8:27 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: One murder is a tragedy, but 113 is a statistic – a dubious one, but comfort to the Belize Police Department.

With a rate of 25 murders per 100,000 people, it represents a decrease of 12 from 2021 and a corresponding decrease in the murder rate from 29.5 murders per 100,000 people.

Belize’s worst year for murder was 2012 with 145 or 42.5 per 100,000 people, well above the “civil war benchmark” of 30 per 100,000. 2013 saw just 99 murders or 28.3 per 100,000, the recent lowest mark.

According to the Commissioner, “we have the best per capita rating right now and we have gone from being number three in the Caribbean region to being number six which shows that we are doing something right.”

We’ll have more on this in subsequent stories.
