COVID report: Fall in active cases but high number of new cases reported in first week of January

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness cautioned on Monday that Belizeans should not start celebrating any lessening of the latest COVID wave, and the numbers it released this evening appear to bear that out.

In the week of January 4 to 10, 223 new cases of COVID-19 were reported countrywide, down only slightly from the 228 reported in the previous week. Active cases, sitting at 150 last week, are down to 104. One new hospitalization was reported, bringing the number to three, but no new deaths were reported.

The weekly positivity rate remains at 12.4 percent and 11 percent of the country has now been infected, including possible re-infections.

As for where the cases are, 90 of 118 cases in the Belize District (except for San Pedro which reported just one new case) were in Belize City. The Cayo District reported another 45 cases, the northern districts 23 between them and the southern districts 36 between them.

Belizeans are encouraged to remain vigilant and protect themselves as the higher transmissibility still makes the virus a threat for vulnerable persons.
