International News: Chile, Colombia call for OAS meeting after riots in Brazil

Posted: Tuesday, January 10, 2023. 11:35 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Chile’s President, Gabriel Boric has called for an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) to address riots in Brazil, Reuters report.

Boric made the call alongside, Colombia President Gustavo Petro outside La Moneda presidential palace in Santiago.

Supporters of Brazil’s former President, Jair Bolsonaro have taken to the streets and stormed the country’s Congress and Presidential Palace.

The Chilean President said that the riots were “unacceptable”.

Boric said that the situation is concerning for the region and that the other countries in the region could take a stance at the OAS meeting.

The Chilean and Colombian President have both expressed their support for Brazil’s President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who took office on January 1 after defeating Bolsonaro in the divisive October elections last year.

The OAS has 35 member states and promotes peace and economic development in the Americas.
