International News: Mass arrests in Brazil as President Lula condemns riots

Posted: Tuesday, January 10, 2023. 9:57 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Authorities in Brazil have detained about 1,500 people after supporters of former President, Jair Bolsonaro stormed the congress, presidential palace, and the Supreme Court, BBC reports.

The protests began 1 week after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was sworn in.

Lula has since condemned the riots and committed to punishing those responsible.

Crowds filled the streets singing and chanting for justice and workers had to clean up broken glass around the Presidential palace and almost every window on the ground floor had been damaged.

Lula says that he “reject the terrorist acts and criminal, coup-mongering vandalism that occurred” during Sunday’s riots.

By Monday, Lula had declared emergency powers, and heavily armed officers dismantled a camp of Bolsonaro supporters in Brasilia.

Meanwhile, former President Bolsonaro has not conceded since October’s divisive election. Bolsonaro flew to the U.S. before the handover on New Year’s Day.

Bolsonaro also condemned the attack and denied any responsibility for encouraging the protesters.
