By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Roque Matus won the Weekend Warriors New Year’s Race from outside Orange Walk Town to Belize City in a heated sprint that finished in front of his business, M&M Engineering, on the Philip Goldson Highway at the Northern Entrance to Belize City on Sunday.

Matus clocked two hours, three minutes, and 56 seconds (2:03.56) for the 51-mile race that started by the San Jose Palmar Junction next to B&B Distributors, rode to Belize City making a U-turn at the old Napa Roundabout, and finished at M&M Engineering.

Matus, who nudged Barney Brown in the dead-heat sprint to take the top spot, said on the Ordonez Bike Shop livestream that a tail wind caused the riders to ride in as a peloton. Matus added that he had taken a week’s rest after a long demanding year, but when he went for a ride on Saturday, he felt good.

“So today I was firing but it was at the tailwind so, in a tailwind it will always be a bunch sprint. I tried a couple attacks earlier and I saw the bunch was reacting well. So, I said, you know what, I’ll sit down and wait for the sprint,”

In the sprint, Matus edged out Brown. Kenroy ‘Smokes’ Gladden rode in third, Cordell Gonzalez was fourth, and Vallan Symms fifth.

Dwayne Wade took sixth, Warren Coye secured seventh, Henry Moreira finished eight, Tariq Cano was ninth, and Herman ‘Hijo’ Requena rounded off the Top Ten.

Elwin Humes finished 11th, Kaya Cattouse was 12th, Derick Smith ran in 13th, Philip Leslie 14th, and Allan Auil Jr took 15th.

A spill in the final stretch put out Kent ‘Bob’ Gabourel.
