By Aaron Humes: Pending some additional decoration and renovation, a 20 by 24-foot wooden building has been erected in the Maya Mopan community on the outskirts of the capital, Belmopan, as a Police Department sub-station.
According to area representative Oscar Mira, the land was identified by the Reconstruction and Development Corporation (RECONDEV), the organization that at one time managed Belmopan until a City Council was installed in 1999.
“We promised that we would help in any way for this Police substation to be installed and we continue to show that instead of words, we are action first. Traffic, community, and regular Police will be stationed at this substation because the safety of our people is the most important thing,” said Mira on social media, adding that “The citizens of Belmopan deserve to live in peace in safe communities. This Police Substation is but one step in the right direction.”
Offices will be partitioned and the building will be air-conditioned and painted before being formally handed over to the police command. The area rep gave thanks to the Police, RECONDEV, and others involved in the project.
The Department identified the need for a permanent presence in the area since the tragedy of three murders and four persons injured in 72 hours between December 29 and New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2022. Michael Flowers was shot dead and two other men injured, then Jon and David Ramnarace were attacked in the former’s yard, and their spouse and partner respectively also wounded by gunfire.
