International News: 11 people detained in Mexico after attack on journalist

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum says that 11 people have been arrested in connection with an attack on television and radio host, Ciro Gomez Leyva, Reuters report.

Leyva was ambushed on December 15 by a gunman on a motorcycle who fired shots at his vehicle.

“Eleven people related to the attack on journalist Ciro Gomez Leyva were arrested earlier this morning,” the mayor said.

“The investigation continues to find the others responsible,” she added.

Mexico’s attorney general, Ernestina Godoy says that those detained could be charged with attempted murder when they appear before a judge.

Authorities are still investigating if those detained belonged to an organized crime group.

Reporters without Borders (RSF) say that Mexico is one of the world’s deadliest countries for journalists recording deaths of 11 journalists in 2022.
