Leader of the Opposition wants police to charge John Saldivar

Posted: Wednesday, January 11, 2023. 12:41 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Leader of the Opposition Moses Shyne Barrow, is concerned that the Belize Police Department has not diligently sought to criminally charge former United Democratic Party Leader, John Saldivar.

Speaking with the media this week, Barrow conveyed his disappointment at the way accusations of corruption against Saldivar are being handled by the police, stressing that Saldivar poses a threat to Belize’s democracy.

“John Saldivar is an existential threat to the opposition and the government has an active investigation against him and they are not concluding that? They’re just going to leave that open? Again, we expected different. We expect follow through,” Barrow said.

Saldivar, not to be outdone, took to social media shortly after Barrow’s comments to voice his displeasure without making any personal attacks against his party leader.

“It is unprecedented and in my view wrong what the Party Leader has done. However, out of respect for the office that he holds I will not respond in kind,” Saldivar said.

He also found solace in the people of Belmopan, saying that they know him better and that he is looking forward to the party’s upcoming national convention in October.

Last week, Barrow publicly called for police to charge Saldivar for “wilful suppression” as well as using public assets for his personal gain during his time as police minister. Barrow’s stance against Saldivar follows the decision by the United States Department of State to designate Saldivar as a person involved in “significant corruption.”
