By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, residents in San Pedro Town gathered at the Lion’s Den to witness the historic signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Governments of Belize and Taiwan for the construction of the San Pedro General Hospital.

Prime Minister John Briceno says that the island community has grown exponentially and the signing of the agreement brings the hospital one step closer to reality.

“Over the years, the island community has sure grown exponentially in population, distribution of the population across the island, and its economy led by tourism. My Administration is pleased to be answering a long-identified and advocated need. The hospital for San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye is one step closer to reality as today we signed the Cooperation Agreement between the Government of Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan) for the $33M dollar grant for the facility,” the Prime Minister said.

“We are thankful for Taiwan’s continued partnership with our government and people of Belize,” the Prime Minister added.

The Prime Minister was joined by Minister of Health and Wellness, Kevin Bernard, Area Representative Andre Perez, and Mayor Gualberto Nunez.

Belize and Taiwan continue to enjoy strong bilateral relations.
