UDP Party Leader Shyne Barrow endorses retired Colonel George Lovell for Belmopan Standard Bearer

By Benjamin Flowers: Leader of the Opposition Moses Shyne Barrow has endorsed a career public officer, retired Colonel George Lovell to be the United Democratic Party’s Standard Bearer for the Belmopan constituency.

As the UDP prepares for the Belmopan convention on February 5, Barrow stressed that Lovell’s impeccable character and longstanding record of service makes him the ideal candidate for the UDP. Speaking with Channel 7’s Jules Vasquez, Barrow said that Lovell is the best representation of where the UDP is and where the party needs to go.

“I will unreservedly say that the retired colonel, decorated military service, former public officer, former CEO, unblemished, distinguished service in public life, unquestionable character, is the candidate that we could only hope to have,” Barrow said.

Barrow went on to say that, while it is outside of the norm that a party leader so publicly endorses a candidate, his intervention was necessary as the other candidate for standard bearer, former UDP party leader John Saldivar, is a threat to the party and a threat to Belize’s democracy.

Lovell’s career in the public service began in 1979 when he served as a clerk in the Government Audit Department. He remained in that post until 1984 when he transitioned into the Belize Defense Force and would go on to study at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in the United Kingdom.

Lovell was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in December 1985. He remained in the BDF until August 2005 when he formally retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Lovell also served as the National Coordinator for the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) of Belize from 2005-2008. He also held CEO posts within the Ministry of Public Utilities, Transport and Communication and NEMO from 2008 – 2010, the Ministry of Police and Public Safety from 2010 – 2012, and the Ministry of National Security from March 2012 – November 2020.
