Attorney drops case against Orange Walk businessman after getting his money back

By Breaking Belize News Staff: An Orange Walk businessman walked free from a charge of obtaining property by deception this week after the complainant dropped the charges.

Sixty-seven-year-old Attorney Mark Williams appeared in court on Wednesday to say that he no longer wished to proceed with the case against 37-year-old Jonathan Burgos after Burgos repaid him the $3,500 which was stolen.

The matter was then struck out for want of prosecution.

In September 2022, Williams paid the money to Burgos as a down payment for a vehicle that he intended to purchase; however, after more than a month, Burgos could neither produce the vehicle nor the money for the down payment. In November, Williams decided to press charges.
