Belize City Council presents Key to Belize City to Andre Gray, Belizean-American inventor known as Godfather of Internet Inventions

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize City Council on Wednesday presented the Key to Belize City to Andre Gray, a Belizean-American inventor known as the Godfather of Internet Inventions.

In December 2021, the Washington Mail hailed Gray as the No.1 ranked inventor in the world for the past 33 consecutive years and named him 2021 Person of the Year.

The Washington Mail said Gray was credited with countless inventions that have made the internet what it is now and considered 80% responsible for how smartphones work.

“It was indeed a special and humbling moment for me, Deputy Mayor Alan Pollard, Councilors and our City to be able to bestow the key to Belize City to this giant of a Belizean!” Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner said.

“Our young kids need to hear the story of Andre!” Mayor Bernard Wagner said.

Gray grew up in Belize. Now 56, he is the son of the late attorney Joseph Cutbert Gray and his wife Eleanor. He attended St. Catherine Elementary School and St. John’s College.  In 1981, at the age of 15, he migrated to the United States when he was in second form.

“Today we are excited to present the Key to Belize City to Mr. Andre Gray, a Belizean-American inventor who is known as the Godfather of Internet Inventions. In addition to being ranked as the #1 inventor in the world for more than 30 years, Mr. Gray most recently topped the London Defender “Power 100” Most Influential People in the World 2022,” the Belize City Council said in a social media post.

“His remarkable impact on the digital revolution which paved the road for technologies we use in our daily lives is astonishing. Mayor Bernard Wagner and the Belize City Council is proud to acknowledge a born Belizean who quite literally has changed the world through his contributions, and we hope that he can act as an inspiration to others.”

According to the Washington Mail, Gray grew up in Belize as a normal but curious boy who made his “own kites, tops, sling shots, and small woodworking projects like lamps, paper towel holder, bread box and things of that sort.”

“Yes, all the boys living in Belize City, and perhaps the entire country, were naturally skilled with their hands. Whatever projects I was making at the time, they made, too,” he told the Los Angeles Tribune which featured a conversation with him on December 14, 2021.

“What sets me apart from the pack was when I made projects like the camera obscura, a wooden cypher and a crystal radio,” Gray said.

“Facebook is built on my technology,” Gray told the Amandala in July 2017.

Gray is also credited with inventing the first bot in 1988. He named it “inkling”, and infused it with artificial intelligence.

“Without internet bots, the internet would not have grown to its massive size that it is today. So, basically, internet bots are the internet,” said the Washington Mail.
