By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, lawmakers in El Salvador approved the country’s 10th extension of a state of emergency that commenced in March of 2022.
Salvadoran President, Nayib Bukele’s administration continues its crackdown on gangs in an effort to decrease crime and violence.
President of the Legislative assembly, Ernesto Castro said that he voted in favor of the measure and that he will do so as many times necessary to rid the country of the gangs, MSN reports.
The mano-dura measure has been criticized by many and human rights groups have called on the Salvadoran government to respect the rights of those detained.
However, polls show that majority of Salvadorans support the measure.
