By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, a United Nations official called for an investigation into the murder of 2 environmental activists in Honduras, Reuters report.
The environmental activists were known for opposing an illegal mine polluting water supplies in a national reserve.
The activists, Aly Dominguez and Jairo Bonilla were shot dead on Saturday.
Local authorities say that the activists were robbed and killed.
“It’s vital that an independent investigation is carried out into the killing of the two defenders in Guapinol,” U.S. special rapporteur Mary Lawlor said.
The environmental group that the activists belonged to, Guapinol Resiste rejected the claim that they were robbed.
“It was not a robbery. They were killed for defending the rivers from illegal mining. Justice for Aly and Jairo,” the group said in a statement.
