By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The World Health Organization (WHO) says that it is working with China to manage the COVID-19 risks ahead of the travel rush for the Lunar New Year, Reuters report.
Last month, China abandoned its strict zero-covid policies and since then, the country has been a surge in infections.
The WHO has met with Chinese scientists and health experts in an effort to completely assess the situation.
However, the WHO says that it still doesn’t have enough information to make a full assessment of the dangers of the new surge.
Before COVID-19, the Lunar New Year celebrations which officially commences on January 21 was known as the world’s largest annual migration of people.
“We’ve been working with our China colleagues,” said Abdi Rahman Mahamud, director of the WHO’s alert and response coordination department.
“But to understand better we require that data,” he added.
The agency said that China is still underreporting deaths from COVID-19.
