Police Corporal Kareem Martinez to appear in Supreme Court in manslaughter case of Laddie Gillett in ten days

By Aaron Humes: According to the Guardian, Supreme Court Justice Antoinette Moore will try Police Corporal Kareem Martinez for the manslaughter of Laddie Gillett, 14, beginning on January 23, ten days and a few hours from now.

Martinez is being represented by Oscar Selgado while Javier Chan, Senior Crown Counsel, is acting as prosecutor.

On July 14, 2021, Gillett, originally from the Cayo District, was in Placencia, Stann Creek District on holiday and was returning with a friend to his accommodations at a resort in the area when they were set upon. The teenager was fatally shot in the back as they ran while his friend was allegedly hit by a baton. It was reported at the time that police were investigating robberies in the area and thought they had hit upon the suspects.

Martinez was arrested and charged and is out on bail.

The Laddie Gillett Foundation was formed to raise awareness of the inequalities of the justice system and to ensure that the youth did not die in vain. A park was created at the site of Laddie’s death to serve as an area of peace and recreation in the village.
