Taiwan and Belize enjoy 34 years of bilateral relations with a new medical project

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: This year, Taiwan and Belize will celebrate 34 years of bilateral relations.

Throughout the years, the two countries have collaborated on various projects including strengthening the medical system in Belize, and agricultural and educational projects among others.

On January 11, 2023, Taiwan Ambassador to Belize, David Kuan-Chou Chien signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Government of Belize for the construction of the San Pedro General Hospital.

Prime Minister John Briceno stated that the island community has grown exponentially and his administration is pleased to be able to answer to the long-advocated need of the hospital.

“Over the years, the island community has sure grown exponentially in population, distribution of the population across the island, and its economy led by tourism. My Administration is pleased to be answering a long-identified and advocated need. The hospital for San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye is one step closer to reality,” the Prime Minister said.

Attendees included Minister of Blue Economy and Civil aviation, Andre Perez, Minister of Health and Wellness, Kevin Bernard, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, Christopher Coye, and Mayor Wally Nunez.

The Taiwan Embassy in Belize said that the Government of Taiwan is happy to be working with Belize on this much-needed project.

“As San Pedro is famous for its beautiful ocean view, precious marine resources, and vitality of people, the residents and tourists on this island are always troubled with the long distance to get medical care. To further satisfy the medical needs and complete the health care system in San Pedro, the Government of Taiwan is delighted to work with the Government of Belize to implement the construction project of San Pedro General Hospital, which we hope to create a better environment of public health and medical care thus can make a big difference for the local community,” the Embassy said.

“As a trustworthy and faithful ally of Belize, Taiwan is committed to working continuously and closely with Belize to further strengthen the bilateral relationship between our two countries and to further advance the wellbeing and benefits of Belizean people,” the embassy added.
