International News: Mexican police says extortion gang attempted to kill journalist

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, law enforcement authorities in Mexico said that an extortion and drug dealing gang is responsible for the December 15^th attack on one of Mexico’s best-known journalists, Reuters report.

Authorities had detained 11 people in connection with the attack on a vehicle driven by journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva.

The gang is known for murder and extorting money from business people and street level drug dealing.

Leyva escaped shaken but unharmed from the attack after 2 gunmen on a motorcycle had tried to kill him.

During the searches, police found a cap with the letters CJNG, the initials of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Earlier in 2022, a top member of the Jalisco cartel threatened another journalist.

Last year was the deadliest year in at least three decades for Mexican journalists and media workers.
