By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Chinese officials are reporting that almost 60,000 COVID-19 patients have died in hospitals in China since the country abandoned its strict zero-covid measures in December, Reuters report.
Jiao Yahui of China’s National Health Commission said that between December 8 and January 12, COVID-19 deaths totalled 59,938.
Jiao said that of the patients who died, 90.1% were aged 65 and older.
However, Jiao said that COVID-19 fever and emergency hospitalizations have peaked in China and they are now seeing a decline.
The World Health Organization (WHO) had indicated that China was underreporting COVID-19 deaths after statistics showed 5 or fewer deaths a day over the last month.
