By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Punta Gorda Town resident is recovering after being shot by police last night.
Police were responding to a call regarding a shooting on Mahogany Street at 10:05 p.m. and were looking for two armed men on a motorcycle when they encountered Andel Alvarez traveling on a motorcycle headed in the opposite direction from the police mobile.
Police constable Luella Whyte said she positively identified Alvarez and told him to stop, but he instead tried to flee the scene. The officers gave chase during which time Alvarez’s motorcycle malfunctioned and he tried to escape on foot. Officers say that while he was running away, he pulled out a gun and pointed it at them.
PC Whyte said that, in response, she fired a shot at him with her service weapon, hitting him in the rear of the upper left shoulder. Alvarez was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital for treatment, while officers recovered a .9mm weapon with no serial number from the scene.
