San Pedro Pirates blank Progresso 2-0 in Premier League of Belize season opener

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The San Pedro Pirates made easy pickings of Progresso 2-0 in the Premier League of Belize season opener at Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro on Saturday night.

The third-place team had a good start to the season collecting their first three points with a convincing win over the Northern side that had had a good closing to the Opening Championship but couldn’t find their rhythm in their furst match of the Closing Championship.

Mario Chimal hit the opener in the 23rd minute before Argentine Facundo Garnier, who returned from a stint with Verdes, put the game away in the 43rd.

The San Pedro Pirates and Benque Viejo United, who shocked Altitude 1-0, now lead the PLB with 3 points each, but the Pirates edge the Benque side by goal difference.

San Pedro added players like Trevor ‘ Burger’ Lennan, Garnier, Colombian Brayan Sanchez from Benque United, Jerome Belisle, and Devon Makin to their squad for the Closing Championship.

The PLB championship continues on Sunday with Wagiya hosting Port Layola at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga at 4:00pm.
