By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Porta Layola pounded Wagiya 5-0 in their opening match of the Premier League of Belize’s (PLB) Closing Championship at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga on Sunday evening.
Port couldn’t have asked for a better start.
Michael Palacio hit a brace in the 11th and 14th minutes to put the Belize City side 2-0 ahead comfortably.
Shawn Young, their lead scorer in the Opening Championship, made his presence felt also netting a brace in the 24th and 45th+4 minutes for a 4-0 lead at the half.
The second half was low keyed until Jarret Davis nailed the fifth in the 90th+1 for the final 5-0 victory.
Wagiya have opted to go national, dropping its foreign players, according to owner-manager Nelson Moss, and paid the price in their first game. Now, they’ve got to work to build a strong team.
Tied at three points with the San Pedro Pirates and Benque United, Port Layola are the leaders on goal difference. San Pedro won 2-0 over Progresso while Benque Viejo United shocked champions Altitude 1-0.
That leaves the Verdes vs Bandits match pending. The game was originally scheduled for the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio on Sunday at 4:00 pm but was switched to Wednesday, January 18, at 7:30 pm as a Bandits home game at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan.
