By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Independent runner Ardel Avila won the Father of the Nation 10K (6.2 miles), organized by the Belmopan Sports Council, on Sunday, January 15, on the occasion of George Price Day.
Avila was clocked at 38 minutes and 3.8 seconds (38:03.8), according to Total Time Belize. The race that ran through Belmopan, took to the Philip Goldson and Hummingbird Highways, and Forest Drive started and ended at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan.
Last year’s winner Albert Davis opted to run in and won the George Price Day 15K in Belize City. Last year, the Father of the Nation race only covered eight kilometers. Davis ran it in 27 minutes and 53.5 seconds.
Avila was followed by Mario Vivas of the Belize Track Club who took second place in 38:25.1. Jonathan Chiquin was third in 40:00.1.
Westrac Slick Runners’ Cody Pech finished in fourth position in 42.26.4.
Team Juiciness’ Edgar Alvarez (42:29.9) was fifth, Belize Track Club’s Christopher Broaster (42:40.0) ran in sixth, and Nadir Price (43:18.1) was seventh.
Ana López Camp of Team Splash was eight overall, clocking 43:26.6 and taking the Women’s Category.
Hector Cucul (45:17.1) was eighth overall and eighth in the Men’s Category.
Westrac Slick Runners’ Roxana Lemus (45:21.5) finished 10th overall and 2nd in the Women’s Category.
Ajani Requeña (46:08.6) of Next Level Communications was 11th overall and ninth in the Men’s Category. He was followed by Westrac’s Carlos Martinez (46:13.9) who ran in 12th overall and 10th in the Men’s Category.
All 87 riders who started the race completed the 10 kilometers.
