Fisheries Department mourns loss of longstanding member Vivian Ramnarace

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Fisheries Department is mourning the loss of Vivian Ramnarace, a longstanding member who died on Sunday night.

The Department joins the Minister and CEO of the Blue Economy, in issuing a statement in light of Ramnarace’s passing, expressing sorry and condolences for her loved ones.

“Mrs. Belisle Ramnarace began her journey at the Fisheries Department in November of 2007. In these more than 15 years, she has been integral to the work that the Department does. She was a dedicated, knowledgeable, hard working professional with a vast network and a keenness to get the work done well,” the Department said.

The Department went on to say that she will always be remembered fondly.

Vivian Ramnarace was shot on December 31, 2022, at her home in Belmopan. Her husband John Ramnarace and his brother David were brutally murdered during the incident, but she managed to survive the ordeal by locking herself along with David’s wife inside a room in the house.

She was treated at the Western Regional Hospital and later released. However, on January 15, she began having complications and returned to the hospital, where she died shortly before 8:00 p.m.

Police Corporal Elmer Nah has been charged for the shooting and remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison where he is reportedly on suicide watch.
