International News: Taiwan’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs visit Latin American allies

Posted: Tuesday, January 17, 2023. 10:27 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In December, Taiwan’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexander Yui visited Taiwan’s Latin American allies in efforts to strengthen cooperation, Taipei Times reports.

The visits comes amidst concern that some allies could sever diplomatic ties with Taipei.

In October 2022, the Chinese Communist Party held its 20th National Congress and Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu said there were “signs” and intelligence suggesting that a few allies might consider cutting ties with Taiwan.

Those include Paraguay since its Presidential candidate for the opposition said that the country would cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan if he wins the April election.

During her election campaign in November 2021, Honduran President Xiomara Castro also said she would consider severing ties with Taiwan.

In 2022, Belize’s Prime Minister John Briceno led a delegation to Taiwan and has had frequent high level interactions with Taiwan.
