Attorney General: “We have overcome many challenges”

By Aaron Humes: Attorney General Magali Marin-Young has promised that we will overcome the latest uptick in violence as we have overcome challenges associated with finance and natural disasters since taking office in 2020.

Her office has been busy recruiting the judicial staff and officers its needs to more effectively administrate justice, but there were setbacks in the relocation of the Family Court, Legal Aid, and Vital Statistics Unit to the Charles Bartlett Hyde Administration Building which the previous tenants were late in vacating. After repairs and retrofitting of these offices, relocation is expected to take place by the end of this year.

Hiring continues apace of magistrates and judges, which will benefit from an enhanced case management system; however, Hurricane Lisa forced the Magistracy out of its traditional Belize City home last November and while awaiting the construction of a judicial complex along Lake Independence Boulevard, next to the Eleanor Hall Administration Building, it has “temporarily relocated” to the former Treasury Office on Coney Drive. A public-private partnership has identified potential financial assistance and plans are beginning to be drawn up.

Among the legal reforms instituted in addition to the Senior Courts Act are the addition of “incompatibility” as a divorce ground, to eliminate the necessity of finding fault for the end of a marital union, and the removal of fetters on maintenance for children. More is to come, including the implementation of protection of witnesses in criminal trials and measures to hold judges accountable for delays in judgments and the otherwise slow delivery of justice.
