COVID report: Fall in new and active cases suggests peak of latest wave has arrived

Posted: Wednesday, January 18, 2023. 12:45 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness’ weekly COVID-19 report shows just 82 active cases countrywide although 158 new cases were reported in the week of January 11 to 17.

This suggests that the peak of the sixth wave of the virus in Belize has come and the country is now on the downslope of that wave. The weekly positivity rate is below eight percent at 7.73 percent and the number of total cases stands at 70,555.

There is still no word as to what variant or subvariant we were facing, with genetic testing scheduled to begin later this month.

Two persons remain hospitalized with the virus and no new deaths were reported.
