By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man was convicted of firearms offenses in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today.
Twenty-one-year-old Dejaun Nunez was found guilty of one count of kept unlicensed firearm and one count of kept unlicensed ammunition with respect to a .9mm pistol and seven live rounds of .9mm ammunition found during a search at a police station.
His sentencing hearing has been deferred to Friday, January 20.
The prosecution submitted that Nunez had been picked up by police pending a preliminary inquiry for a murder charge when the weapon was found on him. Nunez contended that when he was initially searched, police found nothing incriminating on him, but suddenly found a firearm when they searched him again at the station.
Nunez, who was unrepresented at his trial is a first offender for firearms offenses. He faces a possible five-year prison sentence; however, the Magistrate does have discretionary powers to grant a non-custodial sentence.
