Leader of the Opposition excoriates Marco Vidal, renews complaints on crime

By Aaron Humes: There is an “astonishing…disgusting pattern” in relation to alleged abuses by accused murderer Corporal of Police Elmer Nah and his uncle, former Deputy Commissioner of Police Marco Vidal, according to Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow.

In speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Barrow cited links between the two in relation to the murder of Fareed Ahmad (for which Nah has never been charged and in which he denies involvement), the 2021 drug plane landing in the south where he was found with unauthorized ammunition, and now the triple murder in Belmopan and previous murder of Michael Williams.

Police want to interview Vidal in relation to what he was doing inside a grocery store in the Maya Mopan area on Saturday, with widespread belief that he is allegedly interfering with potential witnesses and evidence in support of his accused nephew. Police say they have already spoken to the men accompanying him, but that the shopkeeper has refused to cooperate with the investigation after the video was leaked.

The leader of the United Democratic Party also spoke about the need for citizen security in the wake of Saturday’s incident, in the context of what appears to be a growing apprehension towards members of law enforcement.

Barrow insisted, “We have to send a message, to the country, to the rank and file, that those days are over. Bad actors within the department, within government, will no longer be tolerated. I am here for it, wherever it leads. Citizens of this country should not live in fear of law enforcement. It is enough that we have a crime problem, but if the law enforcement are now the criminals, brazen because, and that is one of the reasons I have been bringing up his name, that is one of the reasons the opposition calls for witness protection because we are afraid, I am afraid of the powers that these people think they have…”

Barrow once more called on Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa to act: “…I am concerned that the Minister of Police doesn’t have the stomach to do what it is he said he would do because this is not for the faint [of] heart. … Mr. Minister, what are you going to do about this situation which many people anticipated. It was reported that the reason the Ramnarace were executed is because they were witnesses in the Michael Williams execution. I still haven’t gotten a charge for Michael Williams. We need action.”
