By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: The United States Embassy in Belize has awarded three organizations and the Government of Belize with more than US$700,000 in grants to support their efforts to combat trafficking in persons and promotion of good governance and accountability.

Ambassador Michelle Kwan handed over the funds to LOVE Foundation, RET International and the Human Trafficking Institute.

In separate projects, the LOVE Foundation will be working to raise awareness of the work of the Office of the Auditor General and Supreme Audit Institution and seeking out diverse operators in developing ideas for better governance, especially with regard to economic and budget issues.

There is a complementary attack on the issue of trafficking in persons: RET International is being supported in talking to members of the transportation industry that will come into contact with potential victims, while the Human Trafficking Institute is planning a follow-up symposium and training of frontline employees in Customs and the Belize Defense Force on the issue.
