Would-be pirates remanded to prison

Posted: Thursday, January 19, 2023. 7:03 pm CST.

By breaking Belize News Staff: Four men who reportedly tried to commit piracy on the seas near San Pedro have been remanded to the Belize Central Prison.

Thirty-one-year-old Louis Campos, 26-year-old Wilbert Gabourel and 25-year-old Justin Campos were charged jointly for aggravated assault with a firearm, while 25-year-old Alexander Fitzgibbon was charged with aggravated assault with a machete, in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.

Allegations against the men are that while on the seas about seven miles north of San Pedro Town, they pursued 24-year-old Tyrone Usher, threatening him with a machete. When Usher did not stop his vessel as they had allegedly demanded, the group reportedly fired shots at him from a machine gun.

Due to the severity of the offense, bail was denied in the first instance, and they were all remanded until March 31.
