By Aaron Humes: A Belizean-American retiree apparently died in Ambergris Caye this afternoon after the elevator in which she was descending failed and slammed into the ground floor at Serenity Shores Hotel, North Ambergris Caye.
At about 12:50 p.m., Police responding at Serenity Shores, San Pedro Town found Joy Quale, a 76-year-old, American/Belizean of Serenity Shores, San Pedro motionless inside an elevator, with injuries to her body.
Five minutes earlier, Joy Quale was using the elevator, which descended from the fourth to the first floor, and allegedly the elevator chain broke, causing the elevator to fall to the first floor at high speed, which subsequently caused injuries to the back of her head, right ankle and bruises on the body.
Joy Quale was transported to the Ambergris Hopes Clinic for treatment and thereafter to Belize Specialist Clinic in Belize City where she succumbed to her injuries whilst receiving treatment.
Police are investigating.
