Court rejects guilty plea of man with bullet lodged in his chest then grants him self-bail

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize City resident 31-year-old Dorian Garnett tried to plead guilty to a charge of harm this week, but the court rejected his plea.

Garnett, who was a shooting victim back in June 2022 and still has a bullet lodged in the right side of his chest, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, charged with harming his roommate.

Garnet initially pleaded not guilty to the charge, but then changed his plea to guilty when he found out that he could not get anyone to post bail for him.

The Magistrate rejected his guilty plea, entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf, and granted him self bail in the sum of $800.

Garnett is due back in court on February 20.

The alleged incident occurred on January 16. Garnett contends that he got into an argument with his roommate during which a bunch of keys was thrown up on the roof of their building, but that there was never an actual fight to produce the harm he was being charged for.
