By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belizeans can enjoy ease of access when applying and making their appointments for new and renewal of passports.
The online appointment system makes it easier and stress-free for everyone to be able to book their appointment and arrive with the necessary documents.
However, with the introduction of the new e-passports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Eamon Courtenay says that the Ministry had underestimated the demand for the new passport.
During an interview with News 5, Courtenay said that the Ministry had scaled up about 15% or so more passports.
“We went on projections of the average use prior to the new passport coming online, and we scaled up – we added an additional amount – a fifteen or so percent and said roughly that’s what we expect – the demand for the new passports. In truth and in fact, it is way in excess of that. The initial amount that we got has been completely exhausted,” Courtenay said.
The Minister says that by January 25, 2023, the ministry is getting a resupply and will work to clear the backlog.
Courtenay says that the ministry is processing about 5000 new passports a week, far more than the ministry anticipated.
