Starting bid for Diego Maradona’s famous “Hand of God” football is $500,000

By Benjamin Flowers: The Latin Post reports that the ball football legend Diego Maradona used to score his “Hand of God” goal is being auctioned with a starting bid of $500,000.

Maradona, regarded as one of the best football players of all time, scored the now legendary goal in the World Cup quarterfinals back in 1986. The also controversial goal won the game between Argentina and England, with some claiming that Maradona’s right hand touched the ball and sent it into England’s goal.

The ball is being auctioned by Ali Bennaceur, the Tunisian referee who has been in possession of it since the quarterfinals. He was able to keep the ball due to a letter of provenance, which states that any central referee who directs an official World Cup match will become the sole and exclusive owner of the ball.

Whoever makes the winning bid for the “Hand of God” ball will also receive a letter of provenance from the match referee, Bennaceur, and a Letter of Authorization from the company Resolution Photomatching.

Back in October 2022 when the ball was placed at auction, it was projected that it would be sold for as much as $3 million.
