By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The 15-day Lunar New Year celebration will commence on January 22, 2023.

The Taiwan Embassy in Belize and Ambassador David Kuan-Chou Chien wishes “all our friends in Belize a blissful, healthy, wealthy & prosperous lunar new year!”

An estimated 2 billion people from around the world celebrate the Lunar New Year. It is widely considered the most important festival in the Chinese calendar.

It is a time when farmers look to the moon as a guide to plant and harvest crops.

The holiday falls on the day of the second new moon after the winter solstice, marking the start of a new annual cycle based on the lunisolar calendar.

Families travel and reunite with their loved ones during this time.

This year ushers in the year of the rabbit. There are 12 zodiac animals, each assigned a year, on a rotating basis.

Traditions include food items that are symbolic for luck and prosperity.
